DR. STRANGELOVE’S GARDEN is a landscape that incorporates previously created atom bomb clouds into a post-apocalyptic garden. Nature, in some form, will continue. This garden also represents the post-atomic ideal of beauty.
My Crochet from the Edge artwork series explores the expressive possibilities of freeform crochet to create sculptural objects expressing my concern with the escalation of the nuclear arms race. This series began in 2017 and continues today.
The atom bomb cloud crochet sculptures of the Crochet From the Edge series express my response to the rising tension and threat of nuclear proliferation. They are beautiful, and almost kitschy, and hopefully frightening too. Not a thing any of us ever want to see. Yet clouds are an ever-present part of the sky and have been a personal fascination since childhood. But, not these clouds!
